National Adjutant's Message
Legion Family,
The American Legion family has raised more than $300,000 to purchase comfort items for U.S. troops recovering in hospitals and warrior transition units around the globe. Now we have the opportunity to nearly double what was raised. Pepsi Cola is offering a $250,000 grant to the top two charities (based on votes) as part of its Pepsi Refresh project. There are 729 charities competing and as of Feb. 1, Operation Comfort Warriors is 21st in votes.
All overhead and administrative costs for Operation Comfort Warriors is paid for by The American Legion, meaning 100 percent of donations go toward helping the troops. If OCW were to receive the Pepsi grant, that money would also go entirely to the troops. Please go to
http://refresheverything.com/operationcomfortwarriors and vote. Just as importantly, use your post and department newspapers, facebook pages, web sites, twitter and all other tools at your disposal to encourage others to vote for this great cause.
The refresheverything grant can make a difference in the lives of hundreds of our disabled troops.
If you have any questions about OCW, please feel free to call Communications Director John Raughter at (317) 630-1350 of visit
http://legion.org/troops/operationcomfort.
Thank you for your support,
Dan Wheeler
National Adjutant

2nd Division Commander's Message
February 1, 2010
I have attended the Oratorical Contests at the Post and District levels in our Division. They went very well and the students were outstanding at all levels. The winner of the 2nd Division is Salimah Jasani from Monsignor Kelly High School in Port Arthur. She was sponsored by Post 817 in Beaumont. The Department Competition is on Monday February 15, 2010 in Kerrville, Texas. The hotel is the Best Western Sunday House at 2124 Sidney Baker, Kerrville, Texas. The phone number is 830-896-1313. There will be a dinner at Post 208 on Sunday evening. The contest will begin at 0900 the site to be announced. Please check the Department website.
I attended the Department Mid-Winter Conference. It was a busy three and a half days. There were many interesting meetings and workshops. I recommend that you try to attend next year. It is a very rewarding conference.
The 2nd Division Convention will be April 30, 2010 to May 2, 2010. It will be at the Crown Plaza Houston Northwest Hotel located at 12801 Northwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77040. Reservations - 713-462-9977. They have a website you may visit at www.cphoustontx.com. We have gotten a great rate on the rooms for $79.00 a night. They have been recently redecorated and are very nice.
Membership is so important to our organization. However, we are not doing very well. Currently our Division is in 3rd Place out of four. So please, ask your Legion friends to pay their 2010 dues. If you know someone that is a veteran, ask them to join. We really need the numbers. It will only take a little effort to get us back on top.
Please send me your District activities so that I can put them on the calendar.
For God And Country,
Lynn E. Sparks
